1、标准情况，表示说话时正在进行的动作，其形式是助动词 be＋ 现在分词形式：
Olivia is playing the piano.
欧利维亚正在弹钢琴。
动作图例：
Someone is knocking at the door.
有人在敲门。
He is working at the moment, so he can’t come to the telephone.
他正在工作，所以不能接电话。
2、暂时情况，用来表示不会长期发生的动作或情况，或被认为在短期内正在进行的动作或情况：
- What is your daughter doing these days?
你女儿最近在做什么？
- She is studying English at Durham University.
她在达勒姆大学学习英语。
Don’t take that ladder away. Your father is using it.
别把那把梯子拿走，你父亲正在用它。
注意：上面的情况并不是动作一直在发生，而是最近一段时间经常发生这个动作。图例如下：
3、事先计划好的动作：指将来
We are spending next winter in Australia.
我们明年冬天将在澳大利亚度过。
用 arrive，come，go，leave 等动词的现在进行时也往往表示将来的动作：
He is arriving tomorrow morning on the 13.27 train.
他将在明天早上坐13.27的火车到达。
I am going on a trip soon.
我很快就要去旅行。
4、重复的动作，和always，forever，constantly 等词连用时：
I’m always hearing strange stories about him.
我总是听到他的一些怪事。
实际上不用现在进行时而用一般现在时也是可以的，但这种情况往往带有抱怨或赞扬的感情色彩：
Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another reason.
我们教区的牧师老是用各种原因来向我们筹款。（有些抱怨的意思）
如果用一般现在时则没有抱怨的意思：
Our vicar always raises money for one cause or another reason.
我们教区的牧师经常因为一些事情向我们筹款。（他认为很正常）
She is always helping people.
她乐于助人。（有赞美的意思）
She always helps people.
她总是帮助别人。（平铺直叙而已）
5、叙事时使用一般现在时和现在进行时
在讲故事或叙述自己亲身经历时，虽然这些事已经成为过去，往往也使用现在时，以使叙述显得生动有趣，用现在进行时表示“背景”，用一般现在表示主要情节：
I’m driving along this country road and I’m completely lost. Then I seethis old fellow. He’s leaning against a gate. I stop the car and ask him the way. he thinks a bit, then says: 'Well, if I were you, I wouldn't start from here'
我驾车在乡村公路上行驶。我完全迷路了。这时，我看见一个老家伙，正靠在一个篱笆门上。我停下车向他问路。他想了想说：“啊，如果我是你，我就不会从这儿走了”
注意：上面的 were 是虚拟语气要求的，而不是过去时。
