金球奖首位亚裔“视后”吴卓珊:我为什么要练习正念静观

这几天,被喻为“女版林永健”的加拿大籍韩裔女演员吴珊卓创造了历史——凭借《杀死伊芙》获得了第76届金球奖的“电视类剧情类最佳女主角”,成为史上第一个获该奖项的亚裔。

与她争夺这一奖项的都是白人演员,如因饰演《归途》而被提名的茱莉娅·罗伯茨,和已经凭借《使女的故事》获奖无数的伊丽莎白·莫斯等等。

大部分人是通过美剧《实习医生格蕾》中充满风情的Christina以及《杯酒人生》中用头盔狠砸男主的单亲妈妈而熟悉Sandra的面孔,曾在2014年的《正念》杂志上以她为封面,报道了Sandra的正念练习经验,特翻译出来供大家参考。

吴卓珊在ABC的热播美剧《实习医生格蕾》中扮演克里斯汀娜*杨长达十年的时间,然后在包括Sideways等电影中开始担任主角;在她的个人生活和演绎生涯中,静观练习帮助她减轻了压力,她发现自己作为演员的创造力也得到了提升。

为什么你要开始做正念练习?

七年之前,我开始了对于静观的尝试。我会听着CD里的引导词,躺下来那样跟着练;我尝试了不同的群体、也尝试了自己练习。但说真的,我真正意义上开始练习是三年前。当我在洛杉矶内观中心找到组织后,我才开始了正念练习。因为在这个小组中,我可以跟不同的背景的人一起静观,而且在一个美妙的地方坐下来按照一定的日程安排来练习,这给了我很大的支持。

是什么激发了你开始静观练习呢?

我想,跟大多数人一样,对于“我该做静观了”的想法持续了很多年,但是,很显然,靠谴责自己不去练是没有用的;我之前一直想要让我的生活发生一些改变,我的一位好友告诉我,她在生产的时候练习静观对她有很大帮助,听完以后很打动我。

那你在练习了一段时间正念后感觉如何?

这已经成为了我生活中必须的一部分,在我的时间表里我把它放到很重要的位置。

你觉得正念对你来说有什么益处?

它在我非常艰难的时候给了我很大的帮助,并且增加了我的幸福感。它帮助我很好处理压力,并相应带来一系列好处。它帮助我更加专注,也帮助我有创造性的突破。做静观的练习,促进我自己成为更好的人,扩展我的视野并保持好奇心。

然而,这是一个缓慢的、循序渐进的自然发生的过程,并不是说,你静坐了20分钟后,突然你的生活就平静下来了。但是当你学会了坐在垫子上,只是跟你的心和周遭在一起的时候,你也能找到更好的面对生活的方式。

是的,我总是推荐别人学正念。对我而言,它是我平衡生活的基础。

练习正念对于你的演员工作有什么影响吗?

是的,影响很大。正念和创造力是相辅相成的。在2006年那会儿,我找到了教我演戏的老师Kim Gillingham,并开始做一些静观,然后我发现两者保持着同步进行。

保持临在状态就是演员的工作。觉察你的身体,觉察整个空间,觉察从内而外涌出的情感,都是基础的。当然,非常简单的是,更多去觉察你自己、你的周遭和其他人,就越能够真实地去回应。

Sandra Oh played Dr.Cristina Yang on ABC’s popular Grey’s Anatomy for 10 years and has starred inmany movies, including Sideways. Meditation is extremely helpful in sorting outthe stress in her personal and professional life. She’s also found it helpsenhance her creative abilities as an actor.

When did you start doingmindfulness practice?

About seven years ago, Istarted experimenting with meditation. I would listen to CDs and lie down,things like that. I tried out a couple of different groups. I tried doing it on my own. But really, it all started to come together about three years ago. Ireally consider that my mindfulness practice began at that time, when I foundmy community at Insight LA. I’ve been so inspired to find a diverse group offellow meditators to learn together with, and a lovely place to go sit that hasa regular schedule of sessions. It helps to have the support.

What inspired you to start practicing meditation?

I think, like manypeople, I had been thinking “I should meditate” for years. But, no surprise,shaming myself into it wasn’t doing the trick. I was looking to make a changein my life and my dear friend who had just had a baby said meditation hadreally helped her during her pregnancy and delivery. Hearing that really movedme.


What do you think of meditation now that you’ve been doing it for a while?

It has become a necessary part of my life, and I make ita priority to find time to fit it in.


How do you find it benefits you?

It has helped me through some very difficult times in mylife and increased the joy of living. It helps me deal with stress—and there’splenty of that to go around. It helps me to focus, and it helps me to havecreative breakthroughs. Doing meditation practice has also challenged me tobecome a better person, to broaden my mind and remain curious.

You can find ways to deal with life better as you learnhow to sit and just be there on the cushion with your mind and your surroundings.

It’s a slow process, though, a gradual, organic process.It’s not like you sit for 20 minutes and suddenly your life is peaceful. Butyou can find ways to deal with life better as you learn how to sit and just bethere on the cushion with your mind and your surroundings.

Would you, do you, recommend it to others?

Yes, I always recommend it to people. For me, I find itessential for living a well-balanced life.

Doesmindfulness have any effects on your work as an actor?

Deeply. Mindfulness and creativity go hand in hand.Around 2006, I simultaneously found my acting teacher (Kim Gillingham) andstarted doing some meditation, and I discovered that they sort of livedtogether in the same space.

Being present is the actor’s job. Being aware of yourbody, in space, and the emotions that are occurring inside, is essential. Well,quite simply, the more aware one is—of yourself, of your surroundings, of otherpeople—the more likely you are to respond truthfully.
