Great days to be remembered seldom come,but small ones surround us daily.^①

I do not have a Roman holiday, but I have anon smoking day instead.

Today a no-smoking sign easily hooks up myinteresting and rewarding experience on the world non smoking day a few yearsago.

重大的纪念日虽然寥寥无几，但有意义的平凡日却俯拾皆是。

我虽没有“罗马假日”，但却有个“无烟日”。

今天，一个禁止吸烟的标志，勾起了我几年前那件“世界禁烟日”的有趣回忆。

As a high school student, I, together withmy friends, volunteered on a campaign to discourage public smoking bypersuading people in public places to extinguish their cigarettes and put thecigarette ends into our metal boxes. And we would in return give them a memorialsticker bearing patterns and words voicing the theme of the non smoking day.

当时还是高中生的我，和几个朋友一同参加了一个志愿者活动，即劝诫人们在公共场所禁止吸烟。而且只要他们把烟蒂投入金属盒，我们就送给他们一个纪念贴纸，上面图文并茂地介绍了禁烟日的主题。 

The first step is never a fast step. Afterhunting for quite a while, we set our target on a young man who was enjoyinghis cigarette at a bus stop. Embracing the philosophy of "nothingventured, nothing gained", we summoned up all our courage, walked up andasked, "Sir, would you please not smoke in public places?" "Itis none of your business! Why do you so busily engaged in such things?^② Go and mind your own exams!" He was great, I believed, for hewas able to drag on his cigarette while at the same time not giving his tonguea break. And I further found out that for this man, such words as "goodfor your health" or "good for common courtesy" had long losttheir appeal. Maybe such kind of situation should call for some other policy. Imanaged a smile, blended with sweet words and tried to dilute his resistance.And when we put the sticker on his clothes, he was lingering over the joy ofhaving done us "a big favor".

万事开头难。在逡巡了一阵子后，我们将目标锁定在一个在公共汽车站吸烟的年轻人。抱着“不入虎穴，焉得虎子”的想法，我们大胆走上前说道：“先生，请您不要在公共场所抽烟。”“这不关你们的事！管什么闲事？去操心你的考试吧！”看得出，他是个老烟枪，因为他在深吸一口烟的同时，也没闭上嘴巴。我还发现，说什么“戒烟有益健康”或“讲究社会公德”他早就听得耳朵起茧子了。碰到这类情况应该采用其他办法。我一边微笑，一边奉承他，以消除他的抗拒。而当我们把贴纸贴在他的衣服上时，他津津乐道地说他帮了我们一个“大忙”。

②Why do you so busily engaged in such things?busybody爱管闲事的人（不是大忙人），因此这句话翻译成：你们干嘛管闲事？ 

Now you see, maybe flattery should bevindicated, for to please is a great step toward persuading and a smile is acurve that sets everything straight.

现在你瞧，也许应该给奉承平反，取悦的话语可以更具有说服力，一个微笑则可以抚慰情绪。 

Our work ran smoothly when things beganeasy to handle in the afternoon. But troubles are just around the corner. Thesecond hard rock we met was a middle aged man who appeared to be more of asmoking addict than a smoking enthusiast. Nothing seemed to be capable ofextinguishing that cigarette. Even the wind seemed to be powerless. We showedhim the cigarettes filled metal box. We spotlighted the hazards of publicsmoking. But all was in vain

到了下午，我们的工作进展顺利，办起事来也开始游刃有余了。可是麻烦很快就又出现了。我们碰到了第二个棘手货是个中年人，他不仅仅爱抽烟，而且显然是个老烟枪。一切招数都似乎对他没有用。连风也吹不熄他的烟头。我们向他展示了满是烟蒂的烟灰缸，并指出公共场所吸烟的危害性。他却无动于衷。

It is that maybe thatconstant drops do wear the stone. At last he extinguished our words byextinguishing his cigarette.

马克·吐温说得好，习惯就是习惯，不宜掷出窗外，应顺阶梯步步诱其下楼。于是我试着层层剥茧地尝试一下。“好吧，我理解你的感受，但你知道你周围的人感觉如何？”“看到那个孩子没？其实他抽的二手烟比你多！”“事实上，你熄灭一个烟头就等于消灭了一个肺癌细胞，也等于当你都消灭了一个自私的细胞。”这是，也许是我们苦口婆心的结果，他最终熄灭了香烟。 

As the sinking sun tinted the horizon, webegan to count the cigarette ends, savoring our little victories.

当夕阳染红大地时，我们开始清点烟头，品尝我们的战果。 

That day saw me toiling for 6 hours,inviting loads of troubles, collecting 57 cigarette-ends, savoring hundreds ofpotential second hand smokers and developing for myself some sense ofresponsibility toward society.

那一天，历经6小时的磨难，遇到了各种麻烦，我收集了57个烟蒂，间接抽了数百次二手烟，但也树立了自己的社会责任感。 

Though it was a little depressing torealize that those people would naturally pick up their "tradition"just where they had temporarily laid it down, yet how far can we estimate ouractions would travel! And besides that, I was rewarded in another day. That is,the experience dawned upon me the significance of care and consideration forother people. Since then, I have been as cooperative as possible whenever I amasked to improve my public behavior and I am always ready to get involved insuch volunteer work.

虽然稍微有点儿郁闷地意识到，那些人过后还是会积习难改，但是可以说我们的行动起了很大作用！再说，日后我得到了一个回报，就是，这次的经历使我领悟到关心和体贴他人的意义。从那以后，我一直尽可能地参与公益活动，而且随时准备从事志愿者的工作。 

In a sense, the highest reward for onestoil is not what they get from it but what they become by it.

从某种意义上说，辛苦劳动的最高奖励不是得到什么，而是改变了什么。

 

简 评

吸烟有害，这个道理妇孺皆知，况且吸烟不仅对自己有害，还危及他人的健康。于是有了“戒烟日”。然而，劝人戒烟是辛苦的工作，例如作者所付出的努力。

作者有着很强的语言驾驭力，文字优美准确，意思表达到位，例如”Embracing the philosophy of ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained’, wesummoned up all our courage,．．．”；”And Ifurther found out that for this man, such words as ‘good for your health’ or ‘goodfor common courtesy’ had long lost their appeal.”；” As the sinking sun tinted the horizon,．．．”等等。

但在第二个例子的描述上，有些地方叙述有待商榷，例如：“In fact，you are extinguishing one cell Of lung cancer when you extinguishyour cigarette．You areextinguishing one cell“the disease Of selfishness when you extinguish your cigarette．”叙述重复，意思不很明朗。对此，作者似乎还可做进一步的修改。

总体说来，作者出彩的文字运用使本文的可读性很强。
