If good things come to those who wait, then by definition we should assume that this is a wonderful building. However, for those that disagree, when considering this as a piece of contemporary architecture it should be remembered that this design took almost a quarter of a century to complete, and as such may on first impression appear somewhat dated. However, the new British Library was built to last, to rise above the waves of fashion, to embody long-term fundamental qualities and, of course, to satisfy the need to replace Smirke‘s original, overcrowded reading room that had for years been the centrepiece of the British Museum, and provide more appropriate and manageable storage facilities. Architecturally, the building advocates the very particular English Free tradition, which grew from a blend of the Gothic Revival and the Organic pursuits of Wright, Haring, Aalto and Scharoun. with Wilson using asymmetry and irregular articulation to create a composition that would sympathize with both the flamboyance of George Gilbert Scott‘s neo-gothic St Pancras Hotel and the complex disposition of the building‘s functional programme. The form of the building defines a generous entrance courtyard that leads readers through the lofty foyer to the reading rooms beyond. At the heart of the building, as a centrepiece. King George Ill‘s library is encapsulated within an impressive six-storey glazed bookcase.
