The Embankment Building is a building of mix use located at No.340, North Suzhou Road.
It was funded by the new David Sassoon & Co., designed by Palmer & Turner Group, built by Xin Shen Construction Firm and completed in 1935. It covers 6,872 m2 and boasts a floor area of 54,000 m2. It was a south-facing eight-storied (now eleven-storied) reinforced concrete building of modernist style. Based on the irregular topography of the location, it has a “∽”-shaped plane. In addition to coinciding with the first letter of Sassoon, it was also a solution to its narrow location wider in the east and narrower in the west and the ventilation and lighting issues in its design. With concave balconies and small windows, its riverside elevation features a visual contrast. At its central corner, there is an octagonal tower. Its walls are made of large fireproof sponge bricks. In its basement, there is a 15.5m long, 9m wide and 2.1m deep heated swimming pool. In front of the building, there is a lawn of around 150m2.
After it was built, most tenants were British and American businesses and foreign nationals. After the Battle of Shanghai broke out on August 13, 1937, the International Settlement in Hongkou virtually became an area under the jurisdiction and control of Japanese invaders. All the original tenants left and the Embankment Building became empty. In 1938, a flood of Jewish refugees fled from Europe to Shanghai. David Sassoon & Co. set up a reception center for them in the Embankment Building and offered it to them at a low rent or free of rent. After the Pacific War broke out on December 7, 1941, the Embankment Building was taken over by the Japanese as “enemy property” of the UK and the USA. After China won the War of Resistance in 1945, the Embankment Building was reclaimed by the new David Sassoon & Co. A host of Western film studios, including Columbia Pictures, MGM, Motion Picture Association of America, Radio-Keith-Orpheum Pictures and United Artists, rented offices in the building. Today, on the terrace of the entrance hall on the ground floor, there is a design comprised of two letters, “E.D.,” i.e., initials of Elias David Sassoon, founder of the new David Sassoon & Co.
On February 15, 1994, the Embankment Building was announced as one of the outstanding historical buildings in Shanghai.
