the icing on the cake  是英语中的一个习语，冠词有时可以省略。要了解这个习语的含义，

首先要知道 icing 的意思。icing 是涂在“糖霜” 蛋糕上的“糖霜”（a sugary substance 

used as coating on cakes or cookies (biscuits) to make them look better or to 

enhance its flavour.） 蛋糕上的加上“糖霜”，既增加了美感，又添加了美味，岂不是美上

加美，锦上添花。

剑桥词典的注释是：something that makes a good situation even better。也就是说让原

本已经很好的事情变得更好。给出的例句是：I was just content to see my daughter in 

such a stable relationship but a grandchild, that really was the icing on the cake.  看

到女儿与女婿的关系很稳定我已感到滿足，后來又添了外孙，这可真是錦上添花。

例句：

The athlete received a gold medal and the icing on the cake was that he also

received a sponsorship deal.

这位运动员获得了一枚金牌，锦上添花的是他还得到了一份赞助协议。

It was a great day, but meeting her there was just the icing on the cake!

那一天过得很开心，而在那儿遇到了她，更是锦上添花！

The meal was perfect, the wonderful view from the restaurant the icing on the cake.

the icing on the cake 这个习语除了用于正面意思，也可以用于负面意思，表示“雪上加

霜”，也就是说让原本已经不好的事情变得更不好（something that makes a bad 

situation even worse)。

例句：

For the peasants , the high tax in the droughty years is definitely icing on the cake.

对农民来说，干旱年月里征收高的税费无疑是雪上加霜。

The large sum of money offered in compensation for the damage was just icing on
