resemble  “相似”、“相像”，指两人或两事物的外貌或性质有相同之处。非正式英语中常用

   take after。

 

1) The two boys resemble (take after) each other in that they both have fair hair and round face.

   (这两个男孩彼此很像对方,他们都有金色的头发,白皙的圆脸。)

2) One of the most striking ways in which the chimpanzee biologically resembles man lies in the structure of his

    brain.

          （黑猩猩像在生物学上像人类，最令人惊奇之处在于其大脑结构。）

这三个名词有“相似”、“ 相像”的意思。resemblance  用法同动词，其后常接介词 to。

likeness 词义范围较广，可指任何程度的相似或类似，相似度较大，有时可与resemblance 换用。 

 similarity 用法同其形容词similar，侧重指有相似之处，但相似程度一般较小。

 

       1) There is not the slightest resemblance/likeness between the two brothers though born of the same parents.

          （虽然是同一父母生的，这两兄弟丝毫没有相似之处。）

       2) However, his own character bears no resemblance to the people which he depicted in the novel.

          （然而,他自身的性格与这部小说描绘的人毫无相似之处。）

   3）  As a movement, fashion show little likeness to any of the other movements which we are familiar with.

           （时尚作为一项运动, 与我们熟悉的任何运动很少有相似之处。）

      4) Can you see any similarities between a cat and a tiger?

         （你能发现猫和老虎有什么相似之处吗？

   5) There was only somewhat similarity on the surface, in fact it was different.

         （只是在表面上有点相似,事实上它是不同的。）

   6) He made a study of the similarities and diversities among the cultures of different countries.

        （他对不同国家文化中的相似和不同进行了研究。）
