    这四个选项的词都有“给予”的含义。解这道题的关键是要从词的搭配上分析。这四个

词的搭配结构如下：

[A] provide sb. with sth. （提供某人某物）；

[B] confer sth. on sb. （授予、颁予某人某物）；

[C] afford sb. sth. （给予某人某物）；     

[D] endow sb. with sth. （赐予某人某物）

    不用说，现在你一定选对答案了。

  

    也许你一定知道 afford 常与can或 be able to 连用，表示“力能做到”的意思，但

afford 还有一个重要用法，其后接双宾语，表示“给予”，相当于give 的用法。一定要

掌握好 afford 这两个基本用法喔。

   

 

●  与can或 be able to 连用，表示能力上，经济上或时间上能承受或做到某事，多

   见用于否定句。

  

       A) 接名词或代词

   

 1）I’d like to take the tour with you, but I am afraid I cannot afford my time this

       summer.

            我很想跟你一起去旅游,但恐怕这个夏天我抽不出时间。

       2）Universities grant scholarships and financial aid to help many who cannot

             afford the high tuition costs.    

            大学向许多无法负担昂贵学费的学生提供奖学金和财力支持。

 3）With the experiment approaching the final success, everyone knows that they

       cannot afford a single minor mistake, which may ruin the whole thing.    

       实验临近最后成功,我们每个人都知道承担不起哪怕一个微小的错误,否则就可

    能把整个实验毁掉。

 4）I am afraid that you could not afford such frivolous and lavish promises.  

      你作这样轻浮和过分的许诺，恐怕你承受不起。

       5）The house is too expensive. I cannot afford it.   

             这房价太贵，我买不起。

 

 

       B) 接to do sh.

 

 1）I cannot afford to offend my employer since he never shows any

       friendliness toward me.    

    我得罪不起我的老板,因为他从来没有对我产生过好感。

 2） We cannot afford to relax your vigilance for a moment.     

       我们随时随刻都不可放松警惕。

    3）A mountain climber can't afford to take chances with inferior equipment.    

             一个登山运动员不能用较劣的装备去冒险碰运气。

       4）Sorry I am not able to afford to sit here and chat with you all day. I have '

             bigger fish to fry.    

             很抱歉我不能整天坐在这儿和你瞎侃。我还有更要紧的事要做。

      5）Some major events have taken place in recent months. None of us can afford

             to overlook.

  最近一时期发生了好几件大事,我们无法视而不见,充耳不闻。

 

● “给予”、“提供”,  给予所需的东西，相当于give 的用法，多用于正式场合,

    而 give 多用于口语。afford后接双宾语，即 afford sb. sth.或 afford

    sth. to sb.

 

 1）Music affords us much pleasure.    

      音乐给我带来乐趣。

 2）The transaction afforded him a good profit.     

       这笔买卖使他赚了一大笔   。

 3）The dense atmosphere of the earth affords protection to man and provides

       conditions for his existence.    

       地球浓密的大气给人类提供保护，提供人类生存的条件。

  4）It will afford me a great pleasure to have dinner with you.   

        与你们共进晚餐将是我的一大乐事。

  5）We can confidently assert that any business we afford you will be

        transacted to your satisfaction.   

        我们满怀信心地向你们保证我们提供给你们的任何业务都将令你们满意。

  6）He was afforded the opportunity to work for a lawyer.    

       他被提供了一个当律师的机会。  （被动句）
