实际上是由某些牙形石类化石
首次或最后出现的时间来确定的。
例如,一种被发现的名为
Siphonodella sulcata
的牙形石类化石就确定了
泥盆纪在什么时间结束
和石炭纪在什么时间开始。
地质学家就可以根据牙形石
来判断出其围岩曾达到什么温度。
终于,到了20世纪80年代和90年代,
在苏格兰爱丁堡的格兰顿发现了
埋藏在上亿年沉积物中的
11个近乎完整的牙形刺动物化石。
这一突破终于解开了
上百年的牙形石动物之谜。
