1. 新手
在汉语中，“新手”指刚入门的人或刚刚从事某一行的人，没什么经验，完全是个“小白”。（比如偶这个刚刚拿到驾照激动了一晚但是不敢上路的“新手”）不管哪个领域的老手都是从稚嫩变得老练的，都有一个经验积累的过程，第一次开车、第一次做饭、第一次进入职场……多少都会略显笨拙。接下来看看如何用英语表达“新手”吧。
1）I'm new at this.
例：
☞Can you drive?
你会开车吗？
☞Yes, but I'm new at this.
是的，但是我是新手。
2）green hand
为什么“新手”是“green hand”而不是“new hand”呢？
因为England是个岛国，船是重要交通工具，为保养船只，常用与海水一样的绿色油漆来漆船。一个不熟练的油漆工，工作时常会双手粘满油漆。所以，人们之后就用“green hand”来表示“新手”。
例：
He is a green hand in business management.
在商务管理方面，他是个新手。
Do you see any green in my eyes？
你当我年幼无知，当我傻啊？
3）rookie
rookie指的是刚进入某个领域或刚开始做某工作缺乏经验的人，用网友们通俗的话说，就是“菜鸟”喽，比如rookie cops（新手警察）。
例：
This was clearly a rookie mistake, and an expensive one.
很明显这是一个菜鸟才会犯的错误，并且代价高昂。

4）virgin
virgin的本意指处女，童男，根据此意，引申为新手，雏儿，完全无经验的人。

5）novice
这个词表示inexperienced person，是新手、初学者的比较正规的表达方式。

6）beginner
例：
The course is suitable for beginners and advanced students.
本课程适合初学者及程度较高者。
7）layman
当你想表达自己是个门外汉，对某事很外行时，可以用 layman 来表达。

8）freshman
新手、生手，还可以表示中学或大学的一年级新生。
例：

9）newbie
菜鸟，新手，尤其指使用电脑或网络的新手。

2. 老手
老手指富有经验的人，如老兵，老运动员。
1）old hand
someone who is very experienced and skilled in a particular area of activity;a person who is skilled at something through long experience.
例：
We should be able to trust Silva to negotiate a good deal for us - he's an old hand at the game.
我们应该相信席尔瓦会为我们谈成一笔好交易——他是这方面的老手。
He is new at the game, and the old hand wins.

He's an old hand at working on cars.

2）veteran
a person who has long experience in a particular field. 经验丰富的人，老手
例：
The veteran diplomatic has been ambassador to the UN since 2006.

3）stager
这个词也指富有经验的人，老练的人，多指演员、老戏骨。
例：
Jackie Chan is an old stager in action movies.
成龙是一位武打片的老戏骨了。
4）expert
例：
The education expert gave some suggestions to audiences.
那个教育学专家给了观众们一些建议。
5）experienced
有经验的，熟练的
例：
He is very experienced in looking after animals.
他养动物很有经验。
6）insider
指对某个领域内的规则和信息了如指掌的业内人士，圈内老手。
