序数词的一些惯用语

注意下面句中序数词的用法:

These are all firsts. 这些都是一等品。

The first two are good. 开头两个很好。 (间或也可说 the two first )

She got (took) a first. 她得第一名

She sat at the last seat but one. 她坐在倒数第二个座位上。 (或 next to the last seat )

It is the second most interesting novel, but not the first best one. 在最有趣的小说中,这本书名列第二, 但不是第一。 (序数词+ 最高级)

The old man has four daughters. One is a nurse, a second is a teacher, a third is a musician, the fourth is a painter. 老人有四个女儿。 第一个是护士, 第二个是教师, 第三个是音乐家, 第四个是画家。 (a + 序数词, the + 序数词)

She is third best student in class. 她在班上名列第三。 (序数词+ 最高级)

The first three chapters are well-written. 头三章写得好。 (序数词+ 基数词)

Business first and pleasure afterwards. 先做事, 后娱乐。

First come, first served. 先到者优先。

On second thought (s), he decided to give up the job. 经过三思, 他决定放弃那项工作。

Don't give it a second thought. 不要再想它了 。 (= again)

She wants a second pair of shoes. 她要另 一双鞋子。 (= another )

She talked with him a second time. 她同 他又谈了 一次。 (= again)

He is second to none in spoken English. 他的英语口语不亚于任何人。

I have known her, first and last, for twenty years. 我认识她总共有 20 多 年了 。

He liked maths from the first. 他从一开始就喜欢数学。

Note:“三分之一” 既可说 one-third, 也可说 a third。 注意下面的两种说法都对:

He finished reading the book in/one- third/a third/(of) the time it took me.
