答：在but引导的转折分句中，but 后插入rather与 插入 instead， 用法上相似, 但侧重有

所不同。but 后插入rather，主要是加强语气，rather 去除，不影响句子原意；而but 后

插入instead则表示出现前面所述相反的情况，或表示与前面所述不同的情况。试比较下面

例句：

but rather 用于加强语气

This dish is delicious but rather a trouble to prepare. 

这种菜好吃不好做。

He is fairly clever but rather lazy. 

他很聪明，但也相当懒。

He's very learned but rather absent minded. 

他很有学问，可是好忘事。

The beach is beautiful, but rather cold at this time of the year.

●     rather  还常插在 not …… but …… 句式中（即not …… but rather ……），加强
