GEORGIA
On January 2, 1788, Georgia became the 4th state to join the Union(美利坚合众国). Georgia has two nicknames: “The Empire State of the South” and “The Peach State.” It’s called “The Empire State of the South” because of its large size. It’s called “The Peach State” because it’s a leading state in growing Peaches.
Atlanta is Georgia’s capital and largest city. The tomb of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the famous civil rights leader, is located in Atlanta.
The people of Georgia are proud of the rich history of their state.
In 1793, near Savannah, Georgia, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. The cotton gin helped make cotton the South’s most important crop.
In 1819, the S.S. Savannah became the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. It left Savannah and reached Liverpool, England, 29 days later.
In 1828, gold was discovered in Georgia for the first time in the United States. In 1842, in Jefferson, Georgia, Dr. Crawford Long became the first doctor to use ether while performing surgery. In 1886, Coca-Cola was first served in a drugstore in Atlanta. Today, just about everyone drinks it.
The first Girl Scout troop was started in 1912 in Savannah. Georgia was also the first state to allow 18-year-olds to vote. Georgia has a rich history and an even richer future. It’s one of the leading manufacturing states of the southern United States.
