FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT (1882-1945)
On January 30, 1882, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born in Hyde Park, New York.
Roosevelt became the 32nd President of the United States in 1933. He remained President longer than any other man.
Roosevelt, also known as FDR, was elected President 4 times and served 12 years. He was President during two of the most difficult times in American history.
One of those difficult times was during the Great Depression(大萧条). The Depression started in 1929. It continued into the 1930s. Throughout the country, businesses were closing down. This caused millions of people to lose their jobs. With no jobs, people could not buy homes, cars, or other items. This caused more businesses to close down, which caused even more people to lose their jobs. Banks had to close. Millions of people lost some or all of their savings.
It was President Roosevelt who took action and gave the United States the confidence it needed to turn things around.
Entering World War II was the other difficult event Roosevelt had to face. The U.S. entered World War II on December 7, 1941, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor(珍 珠港), Hawaii. This was truly a world war as men from about 60 different countries fought in almost every part of the world.
On April 12, 1945, while Roosevelt was working at his desk, he suddenly fell over in his chair. His last words were, “I have a terrible headache.” Roosevelt died a few hours later.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt is considered by many to be one of the United States’ greatest Presidents.
