Jennifer has just returned from traveling abroad. She has been feeling sick and is at her doctor’s office for a check-up. Listen as she explains her symptoms and her doctor tries to diagnose the problem.
Doctor: How long have you been feeling sick, Jennifer?
Jennifer: Well, pretty much since I returned from India.
Doctor: And that was how long ago?
Jennifer: I got back 4 days ago.
Doctor: What seems to be the problem?
Jennifer: I’ve had a stomachache, fever, and some trouble going to the toilet.
Doctor: Diarrhea?
Jennifer: Yes.
Doctor: We need to perform several tests to get to the bottom of the problem. Don’t worry though. I’m sure everything will be fine.
Jennifer: Thanks. I’ve been so worried that it could be something serious.
Doctor: Well, nothing is certain at this point. But whatever it is, I’m sure we’ll be able to fix it.
Jennifer: So, what kind of tests do we need to do?
Doctor: Blood, certainly. And urine. We’ll have to take a stool sample and analyze that as well.
Jennifer: Sounds fun! When can we get the results back?
Doctor: Quite soon actually. If we start the tests today, we should know before the weekend.
Jennifer: Can you prescribe something for me now to help me feel better?
Doctor: Until we have determined what the problem is, there’s no use in giving you medicine.
Jennifer: What do you think is wrong with me?
Doctor: It could be bacterial. Really though, with so many possible causes, we’ll just have to wait and see.
Jennifer: So how should we start?
Doctor: Here’s a cup and there’s the bathroom.

医生：拉肚子吗？
珍妮弗：对。
医生：我们必须做几项检验把问题查清楚。但是不要担心，我确信不会有事的。
珍妮弗：谢谢。我一直很担心会是什么严重的问题。
医生：嗯，目前一切都还不确定，但不管是什么，我确信我们都有办法治疗。
珍妮弗：那么，我们需要做什么样的检验呢？
医生：验血是一定要的。还有尿液。我们还必须采一些粪便的样本来做分析。
珍妮弗：听起来还真有趣……我们什么时候可以得到结果呢？
医生：其实很快的。如果我们今天开始做检验，在周末之前应该就能知道结果。
珍妮弗：你现在能不能开些药给我，让我舒服一点？
医生：在我们还没确定是什么问题之前，开药给你是没有用的。
珍妮弗：你觉得我的问题会是什么？
医生：有可能是病菌引起的。但是有这么多可能的原因，我们只能先等一等，到时候再说。
珍妮弗：那么我们要从什么开始查起？
医生：这里有个杯子，卫生间就在那儿。
