Song of the Week- River - Salute to Classic- Desperado (032)

Song of the Week

Salute to Classic- Desperado, by The Eagles

"Desperado"is a song by the American rock band Eagles. It was written by GlennFrey and Don Henley and appeared on the 1973album Desperado as well as numerous compilation albums. Althoughthe song was never released as a single, it is one of the group's best knownsongs and ranked No. 494 on Rolling Stone's 2004 list of "The 500Greatest Songs of All Time".

Accordingto Henley, Desperado was based on a song he started in 1968, written in thestyle of old songs by Stephen Foster. The song was originally about afriend named Leo and began with "Leo, my God, why don’t you come to yoursenses..."In 1972, after they had recorded their first album Eagles inLondon, Glenn Frey and Henley decided that they should write songstogether. In their first songwriting session after returning from London,Henley played Frey the unfinished version of the song, and said: "When Iplay it and sing it, I think of Ray Charles and Stephen Foster. It’sreally a Southern Gothic thing, but we can easily make it moreWestern." According to Henley, Frey "leapt right on it – filledin the blanks and brought structure", and the song became "Desperado".Henley added: "And that was the beginning of our songwriting partnership... that’s when we became a team."

"Desperado"is one of the Eagles' most famous songs, and it was ranked No. 494 onthe Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time"in 2004. It was voted the No. 2 favorite Eagles song in a pollof Rolling Stone readers. In 2000 the song was listedin MOJO magazine's list of greatest songs compiled with songsnominated by songwriters such as Paul McCartney and HalDavid and Brian Wilson. Members of the Western Writers ofAmerica included it in their list of the Top 100 Western songs of alltime.

WilliamRuhlmann of AllMusic considered it one of Eagles' major compositions. Paul Gambaccini of Rolling Stone felt it was Henley'srough voice that made the song memorable. Although the song is one of theEagles' best-known songs, their recording never charted on Billboard untilthe death of Glenn Frey, when it reached No. 20 on the Rock Digital Songschart.

The Eagles(Lyrics)

Desperado, whydon't you come to your senses

You been out ridin'fences for so long now

Oh, you're a hardone

I know that yougot your reasons

These things thatare pleasin' you

Can hurt yousomehow

Don't you draw theQueen of Diamonds, boy

She'll beat you ifshe's able

You know the Queenof Hearts is always your best bet

Now, it seems tome some fine things

Have been laidupon your table,

But you only wantthe ones that you can't get

Desperado, oh, youain't gettin' no younger

Your pain and yourhunger, they're drivin' you home

And freedom, ohfreedom, well that's just some people talkin'

Your prison iswalking through this world all alone

Don't your feetget cold in the winter time?

The sky won't snowand the sun won't shine

It's hard to tellthe night time from the day

You're losin' allyour highs and lows;

Ain't it funny howthe feeling goes away?

Desperado, whydon't you come to your senses?

Come down fromyour fences; open the gate

It may be rainin',but there's a rainbow above you

You better let somebodylove you, before it's too late

Writer(s):Richard Lynn Carpenter, John Bettis
