【说明】为了保证大家能学到正宗的英语，本系列课程使用的例句全部来自罗素先生的《西方哲学史》卷一《古代哲学：第一篇前苏格拉底哲学家》中的《第一章希腊文明的兴起》。我们的目标是帮助大家尽快独立读懂英语版的《西方哲学史》。

这一节，我们学习第四个句子：

分解学习：

简化一下就是：

Aisfamiliar to everybody, A是大家熟知的

我们的方法是用A代替主语从句。

我们重点学习familiar。

fam-拉丁语词根，表“名声，民意”

il-拉丁语指小后缀，

-i-起中介作用，

-ar，-ary是形容词后缀。

请一定要先掌握fame和family。

英语单词family由拉丁语单词familia变化-ia为-y。重点记忆fam-就可以了。您可以用April, pencil, pupil来熟悉-il这个拉丁语后缀。

【拉丁语】familia：familia, familiae n. f. household; household of slaves; family; clan;religious community

在此基础上，我们再把A展开：

这里的what是引导词，实际上是从句中的宾语。

they achieved what 他们实现了什么

我们重点学习achieve。

a-是拉丁语前缀ad-在法语中的变化，chieve是chief做动词时的变化。

也就是说，记忆achieve的重点是先掌握chief。

联想记忆：

英语中的belief,relief都是名词，把f变化为成ve构成动词。千万不要把believe和relieve再拆解成各自独立的字母去背。

英语单词chief源自法语的chef，最终源自拉丁语的caput（头）——c变化为ch，p变化为f，去掉后缀-ut。个中滋味，请慢慢品味。

英语中的ch多数读汉语拼音中的q，这实际上是西班牙语中的读音。

in art and literature在文学艺术上

我们重点学习literature。

源自拉丁语litteratura——把后缀-ura变化为-ure。

【拉丁语】litteratura：litteratura, litteraturae n. f. writing, literature;scholarship, what is learned from books, book-learning;

litter-是拉丁语词根。

【拉丁语】littera：littera, litterae n. f. letter (alphabet); (pl.) letter, epistle;literature, books, records, account;

重点记忆lit-，双写t，再加后缀-er，-a（表“阴性、单数”后缀）。

联想记忆：

英语单词letter源自法语的lettre，由let-（拉丁语词根lit-在法语中的变化），双写t，再加后缀-er构成。

同样，我们先学习简化的句子：

英语单词exceptional源自拉丁语的exceptionalis——去掉后缀-is。

adj. exceptional;

-ion是名词后缀，-al是形容词后缀。

请先掌握except, exception。

ex-拉丁语中的前缀，也是一个介词。

【拉丁语】ex prep. out of, from; by reason of; according to;because of, as a result of;

cept-是capt-在复合单词中的变化，源自拉丁语动词capere的过去分词。

【拉丁语】capio：capio, capere, cepi, captus v. take hold,seize; grasp; take bribe; arrest/capture; put on; occupy; captivate;

英语单词except源自拉丁语的exceptus——去掉表“性别”的后缀-us。

英语单词capture是法语单词，源自拉丁语的captura——把后缀-ura变化为-ure。

在英语单词accept, concept中的cept-实际上都是capt-在复合单词中的变化，它们都源自拉丁语。
