【习语注释】
该习语的字面意思是“同意持不同意见”,用来喻指“to set aside an irreconcilable difference in order to maintain a civil dialogue”,即“暂时搁置不可调和的分歧以保持友好对话”,也就是我们常说的“求同存异”或“搁置争议”或“保留不同意见/观点”。
【习语运用】
You and I are going to have to agree to disagree then.
那你我只能各自保留不同意见了。
The market, on the other hand," allows investors to agree to disagree".
另一方面,市场“允许投资人求同存异”。
Considering that we have been cooperating for many years, I now agree to disagree with the attached conditions.

【闲话习语】
该习语普遍被认为源自美语,但其更早的版本是“agree to differ”,最早引用习语agree to differ的是英国著名的制陶商人Josiah Wedgwood(1785):
"The principal difficulty is to agree to differ, to agree in impartial investigation and candid argument."
此外,据说英国神学家John Wesley于1770年在他的一次布道词中引用了习语agree to disagree。由此看来,agree to disagree不一定源自美语。
