该习语表达的就是其字面的意思“the perception of beauty is subjective - what one person finds beautiful another may not”，即“对美的感知是主观的——一个人认为美的东西可能，另一个人不一定这么认为”，相当于汉语里的“情人眼里出西施”。

【闲话习语】

该习语最早出现在公元前三世纪时期的希腊语中，直到十九世纪才正式出现在英语的书面中。但在此之前，英语中就已经有不少表达同样意思的说法。比如，莎士比亚（Shakespeare）在其作品《Love's Labours Lost》（1588）中，曾经这么写到：

"Good Lord Boyet, my beauty, though but mean, Needs not the painted flourish of your praise: 

Beauty is bought by judgement of the eye, 

Not utter'd by base sale of chapmen's tongues."

之后贝杰明·富兰克林（Benjamin Franklin）又在他的作品《Poor Richard's Almanack》（1741）中这么写到：

Beauty, like supreme dominion 

Is but supported by opinion.
