学校老师教过''or so''什么意思吗？或许10个里面9个没学过

华生猜想，许多英语初学者都没见过这个词组，就算有人说估计也听成了“also”。从字面上看，这个词组也挺怪：

or是“或是”，so是“如此”，难道是“或是这样”？

两个词一般都作连词用，为什么要加在一起？

其实，这不是什么意思叠加或者两个连词，而是一个“固定搭配”。

这个词组的意思根本不复杂，or so就是“大约，左右”的意思。

or so – is used after a number or an amount to mean approximately; about an amount or number. We can also use the words, “about” for these.

所以，和or so近义的还有around、about等单词，而这两者也用得比较多。在实际应用中，其实很多都是可以替换的，如：

I think we have about 20 people coming to the party today.

I think we have20 or sopeople coming to the party today.

（我想我们今天会有20个左右的人来参加派对）

We have about 40 students in our class.

We have 40 or so students in our class.

（在我们班级里有大约40个学生）

There areabout 200dogs that need homes at the dog shelter.

There are 200 or sodogs, that need homes at the dog shelter.

（在犬类收容说大概有200条狗无家可归）

The train takes about 3hours to get to the city.

The train takes 3 hours or so, to get to the city.

（火车大概要开3个小时到城里）

Mary will be home in about an hour.

Mary will be home in an hour or so.

（Mary大约还有一个小时就回家了）

We have to buy about 7apples for dinner tonight.

We have to buy 7 or soapples for dinner tonight.

（我们要买大约7个苹果来准备今天的晚餐）

在替换about和or so时，注意用法的差别。about是加在数字前面的，而or so则加在后头。不过，一般人都不知道这个词组，所以你能够轻松地掌握它，并且偶尔拿来“炫炫”也挺有意思不是吗？

不过炫归炫，脚踏实地学英语才能真正成为“英语大师”。
