Shanghai to Cap Population at 25 Million by 2035

Shanghai plans to cap its population at 25 million by 2035.

The State Council announced the decision on its website, December 25th.

The city is already home to more than 24 million people, leaving little room for growth.

Shanghai is also limiting the amount of land designated for construction, the government announced the area will not be more than 3,200 square kilometers.

The caps come as the city is struggling with pollution, traffic congestion and shortfalls in the provision of public services.

The restrictions are part of a larger 2017 to 2035 city plan that also includes ramping up environmental protection and efforts to safeguard historic sites.

China’s capital city is taking similar action.

Earlier this year, the Communist Party of China Central Committee on the State Council green lighted a plan to limit Beijing’s population to 23 million by 2020.
