Shang Zhen

Shang Zhen, male. Born in April 1960, in Yingkou, Liaoning. Began working at the New Beijing Research Institute for Poetry (which later changed its name to the China Calligraphy and Painting Research Institute). In 1997, began working at People’s Literature, and began working at Shi Kan in 2012, where he still works today. Published works include the poetry collections Lone Desert Smoke (Da Mo Gu Yan), Orderless Queue (Wu Xu Pai Dui), Half-Face (Ban Zhang Lian), Amber Collection (Hu Po Ji), Invisibility (Yin Shen Shu), and the prose and essay collections Notes from San Yu Tang (San Yu Tang San Ji) and Further Notes from San Yu Tang (San Yu Tang San Ji Xu Bian). Translated copies of his works have been sold in Russia, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Greece, and the Czech Republic. The Korean edition of Invisibility was published in 2016 by the New Century Press.

Shang Zhen’s poetry draws deeply from life. It has a rich everyday spirit, and its innate temperament and emphasis on understanding are experienced, careful, and deftly crafted, and teeming with inspiration. In addition to using meticulous depictions and portrayals, Shang Zhen is also able to extricate himself from his subjects to provide us cold glimpses of them, thereby displaying his moods and tastes.

Shang Zhen’s poetry collection Orderless Queue was published in September 2014 by Writers Publishing House. The poems in this book sometimes read like pieces of spoken word, sometimes throwing a jab to the throat after careless banter, or interspersing relaxed banter with wisdom and profound musings on life. Half-Face was published in June 2016 by the China Youth Publishing House. Half-Face is a self-referencing comparison by the author, and can also be considered a representative text of his “poetic personality.” The understanding, depth, and penetrating nature of his poems can be chilling to some readers; he then draws these wounded individuals in and leads them to the distant light. This pairing of hot and cold is a kind of poetry of truth: true people, true poems, true temperaments.

Amber Collection is Shang Zhen’s newest collection of poems. The 200 poems inside are all new works; the collection can be called a major achievement in recent Chinese short poetry. These short poems primarily consist of four lines. Although some consist of three,  and others five, each of them contains the texture and traits of amber. Like amber, many deep conclusions can be drawn from these small specimens, as they preserve the thoughts, emotions, and psychological snapshots of contemporary people. The well-known poet Li Yuansheng writes in the preface to this work, “This collection of poems—Shang Zhen’s short poems, one could say—is filled with ambition. Its publication will draw many to short poetry and inspire them to work with unlimited imagination and conquer the difficulties of writing in this form.”

Notes from San Yu Tang was published in March 2015 by Writers Publishing House, and its follow-up Further Notes from San Yu Tang was published in March 2017 by the Shandong People’s Publishing House. These two collections of essays and prose are a synthesis of the author’s readings, writings, anxieties, and preachings. These works ponder the ways of the world and the ways of virtue and justice from a poet’s perspective. As someone who works with poetry, Shang Zhen helps to promote the path of poetry, allowing poetry (and literature) to regain its path of truth, freedom, and simplicity.

Shang Zhen’s poetry collection Who Is Second Wang (She Shi Wang Er) will be published in 2018. Although this work breaks with his past methods of writing, it still contains his sympathies for literature and for life, and is no less worth anticipating than his other works.

In addition to his personal achievements in the creative realm, Shang Zhen has also performed innovative work in the discovery and cultivation of young writers and poets in his capacity of full-time editor at People’s Literature and Shi Kan. He has made many original contributions to the broad promotion and positive development of poetry, in China as well as abroad.
