Translation:

A Russian girl tells me that she wants to ruin the stereotypes about Russia, and I say: Come on! Let’s break something!

The title of this article is originated from my chat with a Russian girl. I asked her about what she wants teenagers from other countries to know about her home country.

And she replied this:

I’d like them to ruin all the stereotypes about Russia, these stupid things about bears and vodka:) to show them unique and beautiful nature places, to show how different are some parts of our countries.

I am not writing this post to say she can represent all Russians, just trying to clarify that we as normal people can always and want to speak up our own voices, hoping that the beauty we would like to share can be seen by more pepple. And luckily that we are now able to use social media as our space to say something. For example, I really like that she is sharing her life and what she sees through Instagram.

And as I cannot go outside and no musuem exhibitions available for now, I am into the #museumfromhome, and found a super cool account, a Russian artist sharing her version of paintings every day.

To be clear, I am not writing to deny everything you know about Russia and label them as misunderstandings, only try me best to articulate that if you are not happy to be considered as "Oh, You Chinese eat everything", not all Russians are willing to be seen as "drunk" and "riding bears".

So what shall we see Russia and Russian? I would suggest that you can come up with your own perspectives when yo finish reading this article. There is no one and only correct answer. And you don't need that neither.

What first comes to your mind when you hear Russia 🇷🇺

Is there anything that you really wanted to know about Russia 🇷🇺 but searched few even no result?

My first impression of Russia was of a slow-moving train, a long, largely flat land border, the bottom of Lake Baikal which is very clean and beautiful, and the vast coniferous forests of the subarctic region.

2.Is there anything that you really wanted to know about Russia 🇷🇺 but searched few even no result?

I might want to go deeper into some of the knowledge of Russia's Cold-water ports, and the reasons for the demographic changes in Russia.

1.What first comes to your mind when you hear Russia 🇷🇺

The first thing comes to me would be cold. I went there in the summer holiday before I started secondary school. My instant feeling is cold. And some other vocabluary connected to Russia would be: Moscow, Beetroot Soup (Borshch), Tolstoy, dictator, honor and the palaces. If more connected to geography, I would first think of its high latitude and water system, and its outstanding land mass and the geographical divide of Asia and Europe.

So will this be the geography classes you want to have? for one or more classes on Russia?

I remember that we had Russia in lower secondary schools, and it was pretty fun.

Do you remember how your teacher taught?

In my vague memory, we started with geographical locations (longtitude and latitude, continents, neigbouring countries), then physical geography aspect (climate, terrain, water resources etc), then human geography aspect (mineral recources, agriculture, industrial zones, ports, religions, and architecture styles), ended with an extensive reading (railway network)

Then you must be really like geography, feeling like this is the pace of traditional geography textbooks, some students may find it boring and see no connection between Russia and 'me'? Or your teacher was very good in teaching this?

[Toasted]

Honestly I feel lower secondary school is a bit too focused on examinations

All the content in the textbook, not really extending

Therefore it is likely that many would not have the interest, just take notes technically

I would suggest more extension on human geography and history stories

The second question I actually have not thought through

I feel like google would be helpful scholar resources

If not for academic purpose, for example to know the life and status of Russian, I would say a fieldwork can be helpful

My uncles partner is Russian, and my grandad worked as the right hand man for the british amabassador in Moscow for 30 years, but I myself know very little of Russia, I’m more amazed how huge it’s land mass is, yet how little anyone knows.

Beautiful countrysides, there must be a few but none publicised.

From all the news I have heard about Russia it’s not a great image

I hear about racism, and politics and get the impression that life in Russia must be difficult

Not a lot of positive messages

I am aware that most news we get is negative

I don’t really know what to expect from this huge country

I feel that there is so much to know about and there must be so much I have missed

I considered travelling to Russia many years ago

I didn’t get there. I went to another country which I felt would be much easier

Today my thoughts of Russia are more enticing.

The country I imagine is mix of many cultures and I could consider travel to see what I have left for so long

Professor David Lambert has a short video introducing 'curriculum making' to teachers

Of course I am happy to see your thoughts over the two questions, and feel free to ask your students, family members and friends. But I am not doing this as a survey, but as an example to show:

people's intersts can be wide, complicated and changing.

Maybe to some readers, the points mentioned above are intersting dots but no obvious connections can be seen.

This is actually the first point I want to make: admit and accept what people are interested in can be complicated and changeable, then you will realise there is no need to match all the interest of everyone in your classes. Even you seem to make it all included, this group may vary from the other group.

It is an endless and incredibly tiring if your goal is to chase after the interest.

Let's put this in the real teaching and learning situation, there are some students just won't listen to you no matter what you say, and you may not be reason, the problem of him/her may orginate from elsewhere, and there are also some students will be interested in geography regardless of your teaching as they just like geography, you may not be their reason neither, they probably would enjoy reading geography books without you.

The students who you can influence are those who are swinging in the middle, not sure if they are interested or not interested. There you come!

Of course teachers need to and should be capable of knowing their students, in particular those in the middle. But there is no way a teacher forget his/her status as a geography teacher, the professional expertise is also key to decide what geography you are going to teach? Who you are teaching? How you are teaching? And most importantly, why you are teaching geography and in certain ways?

This post is not to give a recipe but to encourage teachers to think of the three sources of energy (teacher choices, student experiences and geography subject) in their classrooms, and really think hard over the balance before carrying out.
