第三部分  阅读理解

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save a life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not elevators. From the lower floors of buildings, to escape through windows is possible. Learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury.

The first floor window is usually not very high from the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.

Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed before opening the window. Otherwise, smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may have leaked (渗透) into the room.

On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those which are open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement (水泥) might end in injury. Bushes and grass can help to break a fall.

51. When you are trying to escape a fire, you should NOT use ________.

A. elevators    B. stairways   C. fire escapes   D. windows

52. What does the underlined phrase “ break a fall” in the last paragraph probably mean?

 A. To stop someone from falling straight onto the ground.

   B. To stop someone from falling.

C. To stop someone from jumping from windows.

D. To stop someone from escaping a fire through windows.

53. If you live on the second floor of a building and a fire breaks out one day, according to the passage, you should NOT ________.

A. keep the door closed before opening the window

B. keep your head low at the window

C. escape from the windows which are open onto a roof

D. stay in the building without doing anything

54. The best title for this passage is ________.

 A. A fire                B. What to do during a fire

C. A window            D. How to escape a fire through window

B

When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺点). Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.

He listened to me quietly, then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like ? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”

I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.

I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it.“That’s just for you,” he said.“You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”

Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.

55. What did the father do after he had heard his daughter’s complaint?

B. He criticized (批评) her and told her to overcome her shortcomings.

C. He told her to write down all that her“enemy” had said about her and pay attention only to

the things that were true.

D. He refused to take the list and have a look at it.

56. What does “Week by week her list grew” mean?

A. Week by week she discovered more shortcomings of mine and pointed them out to me.

B. She had made a list of my shortcomings and she kept on adding new ones to it so that it was growing longer and longer.

C. I was having more and more shortcomings as time went on.

D. Week by week, my shortcomings grew more serious.

57. Why did her father listen to her quietly?

A. Because he believed that what her daughter’s “enemy” said was mostly true.

B. Because he had been so angry with his daughter’s shortcomings that he wanted to show this by keeping silent for a while.

C. Because he knew that his daughter would not listen to him at that moment.

D. Because he wasn’t quite sure which girl was telling the truth.

58. Which do you think would be the best title for this passage?

D. My Childhood

We know the westerners like to plan for their time carefully in order to do all the things that are important to them. So if your American or English friend asks you to dinner, he usually invites you a week ahead. But if you really have no time and can’t go to the dinner, you can ring him to say sorry. The dinner is usually served at home, sometimes at a restaurant. You should get there on time, and don’t forget to put on your fine clothes. It is also a good idea to take some little presents to your friend, such as flowers, chocolates and so on. When you are at dinner, you should also observe (遵守) some other customs. Here I’ll give you some dos and don’ts about them in the following:

Don’t leave bones on the table or the floor. (You should put them on your plate with fingers.)

Don’t use your bowl to drink soup, but use your spoon to help you instead.

Don’t talk with much food in your mouth.

Don’t ask others to have more wine. (This is quite different from that in China.)

After dinner, use your napkin(餐巾) to clean your mouth and hands.

Make sure small pieces of food are not left on your face.

Then after dinner, you can stay there a little time. And your friend will be pleased if you leave in half an hour or so. Next day, you had better ring him up to thank him for the good dinner.

59. If your American or English friend wants to invite you to dinner, he will invite you _____.

C.a week before the dinner                  D.at the last moment

61. Which of the following is not true?

   B. You'd better ring your friend the next day to show your thanks.

   C. After dinner, you'd better leave in half an hour.

   D. After dinner, use napkin to clean your mouth.

62.This passage mainly tells you _________________.

English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mail are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.

However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoes (探索它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.

And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, should’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.

67. According to the passage ________.

A. sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things

B. there should be egg in an eggplant

C. pineapples are the apples on the pine tree

D. boxing rings should be round

68. Which of the following is the correct plural?

A. Beeth.                B. Geese.                      C. Meese.                     D. Tooth.

69. Which of the following includes two items that have the similar meaning?

A. A wise man and a wise guy.                            B. Overlook and oversee.

C. Hot as hell and cold as hell.                            D. Quite a lot and quite a few.

70. Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are ______.

A. clever               B. crazy                      C. lazy                      D. upset

To begin with, do some study with set phrases and sentence structures. Keep a list of them and make some sentences with them. And, in order to write well, you must learn to read much, which will contribute to building your vocabulary and help to better your writing skills. Besides, you’d better recite some good passages, where you can enjoy many beautiful sentences and learn some useful expressions. What’s more, keeping a diary is an effective way. You can have a try without delay and it’s necessary to practise writing as often as possible.

Follow your dream and you’ll find success is just around the corner!

Good luck to you in your writing.

W:I hear you have changed your job. How do you feel about your new job?

M: Better than the job I used to have. The most important thing is that doing the present job, I can use what I learned from the old job.

(Text 2)

WCould you have my dress delivered?

M: Of course, madam. May I have your address, please?

W:7345 King Street.

(Text 3)

MSue, that report on my desk has to be finished today. But I’m sick and can’t come to the office.

W:I see the report, Bill. I’ll finish it for you.

(Text 4)

MMary, you didn’t do well in today’s maths test. What was the matter?

W:I was in a hurry, and I didn’t check my answers.

M:That’s too bad you didn’t think of it before.

W:Sorry, Mr. Smith. If only I had been more careful!

(Text 5)

W:Sorry, Mr Johnson. I forgot to bring my homework.

M:Did you do it?

W:Yes, but I left in a hurry this morning.

M:Do remember to bring it here tomorrow.

(Text 6)

WGood morning Ken! Why are you so early today?

M:Morning, Julia!Well, I was doing my homework, and I have finished it now. You see, the maths homework is difficult for me.

W:Is it? I’m afraid you stayed up again last night for the football match.

M:Yes. That’s why I am doing my homework here in the classroom. If my mother had seen I was doing my homework at home, she would have known everything.

W:Your mother is really strict with you.

M:Strict? I think she is hard on me.

W:Then how did you watch the football match last night?

M:I bought a secondhand small TV set with my pocket money. And I put it in my bedroom.

W:Didn’t your mother hear you?

M:No, she was too tired after the whole day’s work.

W:Did your favorite team win last night?

M:Sure!

(Text 7)

MSo, two men grabbed your bag as you came out of the bank and ran off down the street. Is that correct?

W:Yes. One of them stopped me and asked me the time. The other one grabbed my bag.

M:Would you please describe them?

W:I’m not sure. Because it happened so quickly.

M:The one who asked you the time, what did he look like?

W:Well, let me see. He was short and he had brown hair and a little moustache. He was very thin, about 20 years old. And he was wearing a black jacket.

M:Did you notice the colour of his eyes?

W:Yes. They were brown.

M:Good. And what about the other man?

W:I’m sorry, I didn’t get a good look at him. He was quite tall. I remember he had a beard. He was bald and he appeared much older than the short one.

M:Thank you. We may call you tomorrow.

W:OK.

(Text 8)

MHave you seen Elizabeth lately?

W:Yes, I have. I saw her a couple of weeks ago. She hasn’t been very well in the last couple of weeks.

M:Has she seen a doctor since she’s been ill?

W:Yes, she has. The doctor told her to take it easy for a while, but she hasn’t been following his advice. She’s as busy as usual.

M:Do you think it useful for me to ask her to have a rest while I go to see her? Or shall we go together?

W:I think you can go yourself and show your concern to her since she sometimes would take your advice. So it’s unnecessary for me to go with you. What’s more, I’ve got my hands full tomorrow.

Text 9

W:Now, let me show you around our school. This is our computer lab.

M:Wow! So many computers! How many computers do you have?

W:We have 80 in this lab and we have another 40 in another lab. Besides all these, we have one for each teacher.

M:Then, how many teachers do you have?

W:88. The teachers are using the computers as aids in their classes.

M:Really? Can we go into the classes to have a look?

W:Yes. This is an English class. The teacher is explaining new words with the help of the computer.

M:How nice! It is easier to explain the words with the help of the computer.

W:And it saves a lot of time.

(Text 10)

Good morning, everybody. My topic for today is “Early Money”. I’m going to tell you something about money used in the early days. To be honest, we know little about how early people came to use money, but we do know some things which have been used as money. In early times, in some European countries, salt was used as money. In some parts of Asia, tea was used for money. The American Indians used nuts and other things. Perhaps the most common money of all was animal of some kind. In some places today, cows are still used as a kind of money. So you see, things highly valued by everybody may serve as money.

The Chinese were the first people to use coins as money. Oh, sorry, you don’t know the word? Well, it is spelled C-O-I-N. Here are some coins of the past. You can come over and have a look.
