It was a cool, rainy day and it was the day before Thanksgiving—the first one my three children and I would be spending without their father, who passed away several months ago. Now the two older children were sick with the flu. I hurried around, trying to care for each child: thermometers, medicine, juice and bread. I found the children had run out of fruits. But what almost broke me down was that I only had $2. 50 left?and this should last until the end of the month.
That?s when I heard the phone ring. It was the secretary from our former church, and she told me that they had been thinking about us and had something to give us. I called at the church on my way to the market just before lunch. The church secretary met me at the door and handed me two currency notes(流通券), each worth $20. I was so moved that I cried.
Then I drove on to a store near our home for something needed for the children. The things I picked up cost me a little over $14. 00, and I handed the cashier(收银员) one note. She took it and looked at it for a long time. I thought something
might be wrong and told her that I was a single parent and how I got it. With tears in her eyes, the cashier said that morning she had prayed(祈祷) to help someone, and I gave her the chance. She added a turkey to my items(货物), took out two $20 bills and paid for my items. Once more I was moved to tears.
As I walked to my car, I was still moved by the strangers’ love and realized that God loves my family. He shows us his love through others? hands.

Did you hear the saying ?If you want a friend, be one. ??
Here is how one new teacher made friends with the girls and the boys in her class on the first day of school. As the bell rang, the teacher smiled at each girl and boy. Then she said in a quiet voice, ?Good morning. How nice it is to have all of you in my class this year. I?d like to know each of you. I am sure we will enjoy working together. ? Everyone felt that she meant what she said because of her sweet voice and her friendly look.
She told the girls and boys her name and wrote it on the blackboard. Then she told them some of the things she liked to do and she was hoping to do with them during the year. In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you may meet fair-weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities (品质) of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability (可靠).
Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person?s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener. At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults (过错) in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on (信赖) a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things as I do. We share experience(经验) and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor, too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.
When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I’ve found a friend!

书面表达
Dear Mayor,
I have found that the pollution in our city is more and more serious. It is very important to deal with the rubbish in cities. Rubbish must be treated properly. Otherwise it may cause a lot of trouble. Here are my suggestions.
First, we should take measures to solve the problem. For example, some rubbish can be sorted and sent to different factories. Rubbish like newspapers and glass will be treated and reused. Some harmful rubbish should be sent to a certain place and buried. Waste water will also be treated before it is poured into river.
Second, to protect the environment, it is necessary to pass laws to prevent people from throwing rubbish everywhere. Everyone has the duty to fight against pollution. I hope my advice will be helpful to you.
Yours sincerely,
Zhang Ming
