only 和 just 的差異？]

 這是昨天晚上我一個學生問我的問題：「老師，just 跟 only 可以完全代換嗎？」

這很有趣，可以代換，但不是「完全」。我想可能沒有人能回答這問題回答地更好了，說真的。

在兩個字都是副詞的情況下，just 和 only 是差不多的，例如：
例：I'm just a little boy. = I'm only a little boy.

只不過，just 比較口語，而 only 在正式以及非正式狀況下使用皆可。

但是 just 當副詞有另外三種用法是 only 完全無法取代的：
(1) within a brief preceding time (距離之前的事只一下子，剛剛)
例：You didn't see it? The sun had just come out! 妳沒看見？太陽剛剛出來了！

(2) by a small amount, barely (差一點就)
例：You've just missed seeing your friend there. 你差一點就可以看見你朋友了。

(3) exactly, positively (正是)
例：That's splendid, just what I want! 那太棒了，正是我要的！

除此之外，當然 just 當形容詞表 「adhering to the principles of justice (公正、無私的)」 這才是這個字最原始的意義。
例：My father is a just man. 我父親是個公正的人。

而 only 做形容詞的用法 (只有、僅僅) 則和 just 差十萬八千里。

此外，當副詞用的 only 有一些獨特用法和 just 似乎也無法代換：
例：You'll only make matters worse. 你只會把事情越弄越糟。(導致負面結果時)
例：It's only too likely to happen. 那非常有可能會發生。
(註：only too + adj. = very + adj. 非常...)
例：Oh, the only begotten Son of God! 喔，那上帝唯一的獨子啊！

 这两个词作副词表示 “仅、只”可以换用，并且都放在它们所修饰的成分之前。 如： 
Instead of answering，she only／just smiled． 她没有作答，只是微笑而已。 
She’s come here just／only to see you． 她来这里只是为了看你。 
作形容词时, only表示“仅有的”；just意为“公正的”。如： 
a just man 光明正大的人 
They were the only people who had the keys． 只有他们有钥匙。

 当两者都作副词的时候
just
1.exactly
2.only:He's not a thief,just a little boy who likes biscuits.
3.it happened only a short time ago
4.used to emphasize sth. you are saying
only
1.nothing or no one except
2.not better, worse, or more important than
3.in one place, situation, or way and no other, or for one reason and no other
4.no earlier than a particular time
5.not more than a particular amount, number, age etc

just few, just little :都表示否定意义,即几乎没有,但区别在于just few用于可数名词的否定.而just little 用于不可数名词的否定. just a few与 just a little:都表示肯定意义,即有一点一些,区别与上面一样,前者用于可数,后者不可数. 而only 的用法比较广泛,但在我学习过程中似乎未见它直接修饰不可数名词,一般都是这样如:I have only the little water 等等

just 与 only相同点：都可以有“只是”的意思如：He is only a six-year old boy. 他只是个6岁的孩子。 You are just another boy in my life.(You are not my prince charming.) 你只是我生命中的又一个男孩而已。（而非我的白马王子。）不同点：just 可以用作“正是”的意思如：This is just what I want.(这正是我想要的。)除此之外，在一些搭配的短语里也有区别：just now 刚才just in case 以防if only 只要only child 独生子only that 若非http://bbs.wwenglish.org/dispbbs.asp?boardid=1&id=180843
