五柳先生传
陶渊明
先生不知何许人也，亦不详其姓字，宅边有五柳树，因以为号焉。闲静少言，不慕荣利。好读书，不求甚解；每有会意，便欣然忘食。性嗜酒，家贫不能常得。亲旧知其如此，或置酒而招之；造饮辄尽，期在必醉。既醉而退，曾不吝情去留。环堵萧然，不蔽风日；短褐穿结，箪瓢屡空，晏如也。常著文章自娱，颇示己志。忘怀得失，以此自终。
赞曰：黔娄之妻有言：“不戚戚于贫贱，不汲汲于富贵。”其言兹若人之俦乎？衔觞赋诗，以乐其志，无怀氏之民欤？葛天氏之民欤？
Neither his hometown nor his family name is known, but he is called Mater Five Willows as there are five willows growing by his house(residence). He is quiet and talks little, coveting neither fame nor wealth. His only obsession is reading, seeking no thorough understanding,though; on occasions, if any, where he finds himself getting a better understanding of a point or two, he will be overjoyed, even forgetting his meals. He has a fondness for wine,but being poor, he can’t afford it often. His relatives and friends understand him, so he is sometimes invited over for a drink, which he never refuses and until drunken he will not stop. And then he leaves for home without tarrying. Although his walls are bare, his roof shelters him neither from wind and rain,nor from the scorching sun, his cotton gown is worn to rags and his basket of rice and gourd ladle of water are frequently empty, he feels easy and contented. He now and then writes essays to amuse himself, revealing his aspirations. Forgetting personal gains and losses, he spends his life in this way.
My appraisal goes like this:
Qianlou ever said: “Neither be depressed for being in poverty nor be eager to seek riches and honor.” He may be referring to Master Five Willow and his like. He composes poems, sipping wine, being incomparably happy with his consistent aspiration. Isn’t he like a man of ancient times, simple and honest?!
