在申请北美的院校时，申请人通常会被要求三至四封推荐信。那么选择什么样的推荐人合适
呢？名人？导师？还是上级主管？？
答案是：了解你的老师或上司，但是No relatives, No friends。 只有最熟悉你的人写出
来的推荐信才最具有可信度。
怎样来写推荐信？
正常情况下，如何来写推荐信似乎因该市推荐人需要关心的事情，不应在我们今天讨论的范
围内。但是，在中国，大部分推荐信都是由被推荐人代为撰写的，应该说是中国特色吧。
我们认为，一封优秀的推荐信应该从从推荐人与你接触领域范围内来评价，同时应该注意以
下几个问题：
1 是否需要面面俱到？
很多人把一封推荐信写上2，3页，在信中几乎把自己面面俱到的表扬了一番，生怕落下什
么。其实，一封好的推荐信并不需要如此面面俱到，简单朴实的语言就1，2个方面谈一下就
好。
2 是否需要把自己优点平均分配到3封信中？
有人虽然不是在一封信中面面俱到，却总是希望将自己的优点平决分配在三封推荐信
中，让这些优点分别由不同的推荐人说出来，似乎更加可信。但我们在这里并不推荐这种做
法。真实，自然才对
3是否要词藻华丽？
推荐信不是文学作品
4 是否需要极力推荐？
推荐信中应该尽力避免使用一些夸张词语
综上所述，我们下面就来看一个典型的推荐信范例：
To whom it may concern:
Mr. ××× took my courses Mechanics of Continuum I and II, the two
required courses for every student in our Civil Engineering Department. He
did very well and got two As. My experience is that students who achieved
good scores for these two courses also did well in later careers. Thus, I
believe he can be a qualified student in your program.
Sincerely,
….
这封推荐信没有长篇大论，没有华丽的词藻，推荐人也没有刻意突出被推荐人的优点，但却
让人觉得真实自然。
推荐信开头
一封推荐信该如何开始？这里给出几种典型的开头方式供大家参考，但请勿抄袭。
(1)I am writing with tremendous pleasure to recommend Mr. ××× for
admission and financial aid to your graduate program
(2)As the head of finance department at Hubei University, one of the
leading research universities in China, I am writing to support Mr. ××
×'s application for your PH.D program in economics.
(3)As his research advisor, I am very glad to write this letter of
recommendation to support ***’s application to your PhD program.
(4)Mr. *** took a summer practice in our company in 2001 and did much work
on Equipment and Base Optimizing, Testing, and Installation of CDMA IS95.
推荐信的信体
说完了开头，下面看看信体改如何撰写，同样给出一些样例并做出评价，请大家自己体会：
（1）This strong interest and diligent work made him win almost the highest
honor an undergraduate student can get in our university. Sometimes, this
interest even drives him a little crazy. I still can remember that he gave
me a call 1 o' clock in the morning just because of his new idea toward
model design. Though I was not happy about his disturbance, his enthusiasm
for economics impressed me a lot.
（2）Generally, it is difficult for students to get a high grade
in "International Economics" because of its great demands for solid
theoretical knowledge and the ability of original analysis. However,
frequently bringing up profound and stimulating questions during this
period, ××× was enthusiastic for grasping specialized knowledge, and
applying professional principles to the solution of practical problems.
Once when we talked to the theory of comparative advantage, she
praiseworthily pointed out that classic comparative advantage theory could
focus on the static profit, and at the same time, it's also very important
for a country to develop sustainable competitive strength. Constructively,
she suggested a government to balance these two profits while designing
plans to guide the trends of capital and other resources. To quench her
dedicated research on specific situation in China, I introduced her some
related books and articles for her comprehensive understanding. In the
terminal exam, an exceptional grade of "88" demonstrated her high
intellectual quality. 这一段没有组织好，只是在说故事，缺少领头的句子。推荐点没有
点出来，不符合英文逻辑。第一句话和第二句话并没有什么逻辑关系，一旦发生这种问题，
很多话就没有说服力了。另外，不能只推荐你得了高分，而是高分能说明你具备什么样的研
究能力和潜力（这才是老外教授希望你具有的素质）
（3）In the next two semesters, Ms. ××× still ranked within the top 3%
in my courses of "linear algebra" and "probability theory". Not satisfied
with the class schedule, frequently, she came to my office to ask questions
on econometrics before the semester study. She paid close attention to
relationships between economics models and mathematics analysis and got a
profound understanding of these two subjects. （缺少实例，显得都是空话，又犯了
英语的忌讳） Due to her deep immersion in her study, she became the most
competitive one of the department.
（4）The more I am familiar with her, the more I found she is a versatile
girl. She likes sports very much, she is the top player of the department
hiking mountains and traveling team. Besides, she is always helpful and
cooperative. （这些没有必要面面俱到。推进入只推荐自己接触到从而有资格评价的方
面，其它的不用说。）
（5）I knew Ms. ××× in Sep. 2001, when she was qualified to further
study as an M.A. student under my guidance 是你的导师吗？ without sitting
for the entrance examinations（用这个词就可以了exemption） because of her
outstanding academic records. As a research & teacher's assistant, I （这样
写推荐老师就变成了research & teacher's assistant了) found her a most
promising student possessing a great untapped potential.
（6）Currently, Ms. ××× is engaged in her research on International
Economics, specializing on Service Trade in China. As far as her developed
considerable expertise in this area is concerned, I have every confidence
in her success for future academic study.
（如果不是导师，就不适合在这方面推荐你。如果是，又没有说清楚。另外，导师有两种，
一种是论文导师thesis advisor， 另外一种是平时可能和他有合作研究的research
advisor）
（7）千万人用的句式：
Working diligently and carefully, he...大家一定要避免使用类似的语句。
推荐信的结尾
三个例子及评价：
（1）Finally, I would like to conclude my recommendation as follows: Mr. ×
×× is highly qualified for your acceptance and financial aid with his
diligence, patience, strong passion for research, and amiable personality.
Please feel free to contact me if necessary. （教授会觉得自卑...）
（2）Since Mr. Wang obtained excellent score in my course Digital Signal
Processing, which usually requires the students' solid background in math,
electronics, and computer programming, I believe he have obtained the
academic background required by your program, and thus give my strong
support for his application.
（3）I believe that his academic background and research abilities will
make him qualified in related research work. Thus, I recommend him to you
without any reservation. If you need further information, please feel free
to contact me.
附2封推荐信
两封成功的推荐信
SAMPLE 1
(1) Dear Sir/Madam,
It's my great pleasure to recommend Mr. ×××, one of my favorite
students, to you for his application to your Ph.D. program.
Mr. *** took my course Digital Signal Processing in September 2001. Because
of his previous good academic performance (top 2 among his class of 30
students), I appointed him as the Representative of my course, which
provided him more chances to contact me. Soon, he impressed me deeply by
his frequently asking me very penetrating questions that were sometimes
beyond the extent of the textbook. I found he had a strong ability of
solving problems. For example, he could usually use more than one method to
solve the very difficult homework problems I gave the students. In the
final exam he got a score of 91, the highest in the whole department.
Since Mr. *** obtained excellent score in my course Digital Signal
Processing, which usually requires the students' solid background in math,
electronics, and computer programming, I believe he have obtained the

my lab and showed his intention of being an assistant of mine. After an
interview, I promised that he could do some research work with me only if
he had extra time after finishing all the course work. I hoped to encourage
his research interests, but did not want to affect his course study.
Soon, I found that my worry was not necessary. ××× could manage his
coursework very well and ranked himself the top 5% among the 3××
students. With the strong academic performance, he did good research job
with me. His first job was computer programming with assemble language for
3 months. During this work, I found he had a strong ability in programming.
Another work he did with me was Test on ×××××× Circuit. During the
time from September to November of 2000, he worked hard and diligently on
circuit design, chipset selecting, computer simulation, and downloading
