例如，《静夜思》中，他把月光描述为 a pool of light, 把乡愁比作水，形容思乡之人为 drowned，与前面pool所衬出来的“水”之意前后呼应。这种对于翻译的极致追求真的令人十分敬佩。

许渊冲先生在翻译唐诗时，会尽量追求英文的韵脚之押韵，保持诗歌本身形式上的美感。
杜牧 《清明》
清明时节雨纷纷，
A drizzling rain falls like tears on the Mourning Day;
路上行人欲断魂。
The mourner's heart is going to break on his way.
借问酒家何处有？
Where can a wineshop be found to drown his sad hours?
牧童遥指杏花村。
A cowherd points to a cot 'mid apicot flowers.
在这首诗中，许渊冲先生将“清明时节”译成翻成“the Mourning Day”，悼念亡人的节日， “雨纷纷”译为“a drizzling rain falls like tears”，把雨水比作眼泪则能体现哀悼之情；“路上行人”译为“mourner”，特指上坟悼念死者的亲友，前后呼应。
