Documentaries on Education
Recently I have been watching documentaries on education in Bilibili, for which I even pay to be a member of it in order to have access to high-quality documentaries.
The series of documentary I have finished watching are titled "The School That Turned Chinese". It follows the story of five Chinese teachers who come to a school in England and then start teaching students there with the Chinese style.
Before we go into details, it is essential for us to make clear of what "the Chinese style" is. To put it simple, teacher-oriented and scores-oriented. In the class, teachers are supposed to be the absolute authority, whom students must respect and even obey. On the other hand, students must study hard to reach the ultimate goal, that is, to get high grades in exams.
The five teachers in the documentaries are faithful supporters of the Chinese way of teaching, which means that they will to insist on their way of teaching even though they have encountered so many challenges in a different education system.
Those teachers are not cruel dictators. They admit that typical Chinese way of teaching will indeed stifle students' creativity and innovation, but for both teachers and students, they have no choice under the harsh competition in today's Chinese society.
China has a large population and the majority of it are disadvantaged.
Another series of documentary I am watching are called "Gaokao". In the first two episodes, it depicts the students, who failed in Gaokao before, come to Maotanchang school to spend another year in preparing for the Gaokao. There is no exaggeration to say that Mantanchang school is their last hope.
This school is very special. You can say it is famous and notorious at the same time. It rises to fame for its great capacity to help students get better grades in Gaokao and also its horrible teaching or training patterns.
Just as I stated before, students who come to this school have failed their Gaokao. They are naughty, aggressive and lacking good learning habits.
How to enable such a group of students to succeed in Gaokao?
Discipline.
All the students are forced to spend at least 18 hours to study at school. After school, most students choose to stay up a little bit. Also, they have to take tests or examinations in high frequency and then be ranked publically according to their grades.
They are under great pressure, both physically and mentally.
But they have no choice.
to be continued.
