A Tang-ka is a painted banner which is hung in a monastery or family altar and carried by lamas in ceremonial processions. In Tibetan the word ‘tang’ means flat and the suffix ‘ka’ stands for painting. The Tang-ka is thus a kind of painting done on flat surface but which can be rolled up when not required for display.
The content of most Tang-ka is mainly the images of Buddhas, deities or reflection of life stories of eminent monks and folk customs. The structure of Tibet Tang-ka is precise and balanced. The painting methods are mainly bright color and line drawing.
The types of Tang-ka are various. Besides colorfu1 drawing Tang-ka, there are also printed Tang-ka, pasted-embroidered Tang-ka, leather thread Tang-ka, and pearl Tang-ka, etc, but what we can find in the martets are limited to two types ----printing Tang-ka and drawing Tang-ka.
To be continued.
