Always and Never Enough----Anonymous
                                                     Always  and  Never  Enough----Anonymous
It is a warm afternoon, incandescent(白热的).Each leaf looks lit from within.I am walking home across a field when I see asmall brown head poking out of a patch of lowbush blueberries. The creature doesn't flee as I approach and stop, astonished. It is a fawn(小鹿),sleek and newly minted, regarding me from the spot where it landed on earth. We both stare. The fawn tests my scent, flaring its nostrils as I slowly back away. The next morning it's gone, but there's a small, oval(卵形的)depression on the ground.I press my hands into the flattened bushes.
Though I cross that corner of the field nearly every day,I've not seen another fawn since. That's the way it is withwonder.
When my husband and I moved to this skinny finger ofMaine five years ago,we immediately set out on foot toexplore the half-wild land and shore around our rented house.Like the wilder creatures here,we have worn our own surreptitious(秘密的)trail through fields and woods,a mile-long path we call"the loop".It passes within a few feet of where that fawn was born.
I am walking past this spot again,on a cool springevening,my brain still buzzing with the distractions(烦恼的事) of theday.A white throated sparrow calls from a spruce, releasingits song of longing. As I whistle back, the notes carry me outof my head and into the world. The sparrow's song is theBuddhist's bell.Attention please, your presence is requestedin the here and now.I am trying to show up.
Strands(缕) of a spider's silk cling to my face as I enter the woods. The air smells of balsam.Coyotes have traveled this path,Leaving twists of scat flecked with bone in the middle of the trail.A pack roamed(徘徊)this peninsula(半岛)last fall, waking us all in the middle of the night with their yips and howls, and taking cats, including mine.I never found his bones,so I buried crocus bulbs instead.I don't blame the coyotes any more than the sharp-shinned hawk that salks chickadees atour birdfeeder. It is the oldest way.Blood into feather, berryinto flight.
The more I walk this small circle of the planet, the moreit calls me.I am out here at all hours,in all seasons, following intimations(暗示)of mystery(神秘事物)in the rustling of leaves,a slant of light,a flash of feathers.I couldn't tell you exactly what I'm looking for.Only that I've been searching since I can remember, and that what reveals itself is always and never enough.
Life converges(凝聚)in these woods.Deer rut in the fall anddrop fawns in the spring, unceremoniously(冒冒失失地)in the middle of the field.Salamander and frog eggs swell and hatch in vernal(春天的)pools.Underground, the trees share nutrients with their neighbors through an unimaginably vast and invisible network of fungi.
In the five years I've been walking this patch of earth,I've covered some ground but barely scratched the surface.Ican tell a red spruce from a white, name a handful of mossesand lichens, recognize sarsaparilla when I see it,identifymost of the birds and many of their songs.you'd think thiswould be enough. But knowing a name of a song or the shape ofa leaf is only the beginning,a first, tentative step towardintimacy(亲昵,亲密).Falling in love with the world is like falling in love with a person. Before you know it,you're in deep.
