Pancake Day

Many people love eating pancakes. But do you know that there is a holiday called Pancake Day in England? It started mang years ago, and it is usually in March.

English people usually celebrate the day with fun games, and of course a lot of eating. However, the most well-known activity on that day is the pancake race.

In some villages and towns in England, the pancake race takes place every year. Traditionally, it is a race for women only. They must be housewives. There are special rules about pancake race: housewives must wear aprons（围裙） and run about 410 meters. A bell rings twice before the race starts. With the first ring women make their pancakes. With the second ring they start running with a cooked pancake in a frying pan. While running, they each must toss the pancake（把薄饼颠起翻面） three times and catch it back in the frying pan. If the pancake falls down, the runner must pick it up and toss it again.

Now the pancake race is still a major activity（主要活动） on Pancake Day. However, there aren’t many rules. Everyone, no matter man or woman, young or old, has fun and enjoys the race.
