The entire length of Egypt's Suez Canal (dark north-south line) is visible in this low-oblique (倾斜的) tending from the port city of Suez in the south to Port Said in the north, a distance of approximately (大约) 100 miles (160 kilometers), the canal connects the Red Sea with the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
Egypt's Suez Canal was completed in 1869, to shorten the route between Europe and the Indian Ocean. It can accommodate (容纳,适应) some of the world's largest cargo (货物) vessels (船) and naval (海军的) ships.

It had no locks because there is no great difference between the levels of the Red and Mediterranean Seas. Most of the canal can handle only single-lane traffic. When the canal was constructed it measured 8 metres deep, 22 metres wide at the bottom and about 70 metres wide at the surface. It has been enlarged (扩大)several times to handle (应付) bigger ships and more traffic. At present about 25,000 ships pass through the canal every year.
The Suez Canal is called "ganatus- subways" in Arabic.
