meinquiry@stanford.eduThinking about visiting?
Due to the overwhelming interest in our graduate programs, we are not always able to offer individual campus tours or meetings with current students. If you have questions about our programs, please call us at (650)724-7660. Prospective Graduate Students Only: If you are planning a visit to Stanford, please give us a call to see if you can schedule a meeting with our admissions specialist. Prospective Undergraduate Students: Stanford University admits undergraduates as ‘undeclared’ and gives them two full years to decide upon a major, and any student in good standing may declare Mechanical Engineering, Biomechanical Engineering or Product Design majors. Unfortunately we are unable to meet with prospective undergraduate students. If you have questions about undergraduate admissions, please contact them directly. All information regarding undergraduate admissions can be found on their website:

ME Supplementary Information Form
The Mechanical Engineering Supplementary Form is a departmental application requirement. It appears automatically as you sequence through the online application (after the Statement of Purpose). You may also access the form at the bottom of the main navigation bar on the left of every page (see “Mechanical Engineering”). Your Supplementary Form will be sent to us electronically along with your Application and your Statement of Purpose when you submit your online application.
Statement of Purpose
Your Statement of Purpose should identify personal and professional goals. It should also discuss your development to date and your intentions relative to graduate study and life beyond Stanford. The ME Graduate Admissions Committee reads your Statement of Purpose with interest because, along with the Letters of Recommendation, it offers insight into who you are as an individual. Your Statement of Purpose should not exceed two pages in length (single spaced).
Letters of Recommendation
Three letters of recommendation are required; one letter must come from an academic source, although we prefer two. If your background includes industrial experience, involvement in performing arts, athletics, public service, or entrepreneurial activities, you may wish to include one reference who can comment on that part of your experience. Recommendations must be submitted online. Please see the "Recommendations" section of the online application for information.
We suggest including the following note from Stanford University when you ask individuals for recommendations:
“Thank you for taking the time to write on behalf of this candidate who is applying to a master's program in the department of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford. The most useful recommendations provide detailed descriptions supported by specific anecdotes illustrating the candidate's intellectual abilities and personal qualities. In addition to considering traditional indicators of academic performance (G.P.A., quality of undergraduate institution/program, G.R.E. exam scores) we are very interested in the applicant's creative abilities, effectiveness in implementation, leadership skills, and personal qualities. Letters of Recommendation are a very important source of this information.”
Transcripts
Two original, official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended full time for one year or more are required. Send them to:
