Why is Santa claus an effective leader?

Why Is Santa an Effective Leader?

There are six reasons, off the top of my head, which make Santa an effective leader and we can study and learn from him as we continue our emergence as leaders.

1. He makes a list and checks it twice. Although leaders think big, they still must dot the i’s and cross the t’s. He makes certain that he has reviewed the Naughty and Nice Book thoroughly so he can make the decision for the children of the world based on all the information available. Gut reactions are necessary on occasion but a systematic way of decision making is more effective.

2. He knows his team members and their personal history. Now Dasher, now Prancer, and Donner, and Blixen. . . . . .He’s been around for hundreds of years and has taken the time to meet, work, and communicate with everyone from the lowly barn sweeper, reindeer keeper, to the chief toy maker and Mrs. Claus.

3. He delegates. Throughout the year, his elves create the toys and gifts for all the little boys and girls based on a vision from Santa, yet they have personal power over their work. Each Christmas Eve, he gives Rudolph the reins and delegates the travel plan to him.

4. He creates a culture of possibility. If you had to make millions of toys each year, check the naughty and nice list, keep a secret North Pole location going without any form of government assistance, wouldn’t you need a culture of possibility. And, he has a culture of diversity with elves—being an elf himself, and now in the 21st century, allowing Tim Allen to become Santa. If you have ever watched the movie, The Santa Clause, you’ll see Tim Allen, a divorced father with minimal leadership ability and compassion be transformed into a true leader—Santa Claus. This is one movie I repeatedly watch!

5. He looks like a leader. We know that we are more likely to choose or look up to someone who looks like a leader than someone who does not. The white hair, the round belly, the jolly laugh, the smile—an extravert and he looks like a leader. He has been called an elf, yet we picture him as a good sized and right jolly ole fellow. We have an affiliation for him which builds value in our eyes as a leader.

6. He has a vision of joy and happiness for all good little boys and girls. He has a mission to provide a gift of some kind to every boy and girl in the world. And, every year, during one night, he lives that vision and mission.

So as you celebrate the holidays this year, consider Santa as an exemplar for your emerging leadership. Even if you don’t believe in Santa Claus, keep in mind that the most valuable lessons we gain in life come from fairy tales.
