The Chinook breed was developed by a rough and ready adventurer namedArthur Walden. After investing time as a “dog puncher” from the AlaskanYukon through the Gold Rush days, Walden returned to Wonalancet, a smallvillage in Tamworth, New Hampshire. His goal was to create a new sleddog breed with power, endurance, pace and a friendly nature.The breedderives principally from the solo male ancestor born in 1917, named“Chinook,” who was Walden’s guide dog and stud. "Chinook" derived fromthe crossbreeding of husky stock from the Peary North Pole expeditionusing a large, tawny Mastiff-like male.
