speculate on /about

 

guess  普通用词，可以用作动词或名词。指事物进行无把握的猜测、猜想。可接名词、wh-clause 和 that-clause 作宾语。reckon 表示猜测 只接that-clause，语气比guess 强，即猜测、猜想的把握性要大一些。speculate  表示“猜测”时是不及物动词，需接介词about 或 on。

 

1) I can’t guess his thoughts on the matter.

   I can’t guess what he thinks of the matter.

 （我猜不出在这个问题上他是怎么想的。）

        2) The negotiation between the three sides is still in progress, but no one can guess what the outcome will be.

            （这三个方面的谈判仍在进行中,没有一个人能猜测结果会怎么样。）

     3）I guess that the manager will not accept the terms they set forth.

            （我猜那个经理不会接受他们提出的条款。）

 

4) I reckon that you will soon recover from your illness and leave the hospital.

  （我认为你会很快恢复你的疾病和离开医院。）

        5) I reckon that they will stand up for the proposal we put forward.

           （我猜想他们会支持我们提出的建议。）

 

6) No one can guess what will happen next.

     No one can speculate about what will happen next.

     (没有人能猜出下一步会发生什么情况。)

7）It is useless to speculate about such a matter. What we need is exact knolwedge.

      (对这样的事作猜测是没有用的，我们需要的是确切的了解。)

8) It is nature for me to speculate on his motives for the visit for we have not been on speaking terms for many years.

              (我们多年没有说过话了，很自然我会猜测他来访的动机。)
