9月的到来可真是有人欢喜有人愁，你是终于把娃送走松了一口气的家长，还是好不容易赶完作业的学生呢？
不管是哪一种，相信大家都对自己的母校有着很深的感情，但我猜90%的人都不知道“母校”的英文是什么……
说到母校，可能大多数人的第一反应都是mother school，但这又是个典型的中式表达，英文中完全没有这种说法，而是有个专门的词。
Alma Mater /ˈælmə ˈmɑːtə(r)/ 母校；校歌
He has fond feelings for his Alma Mater.
他对自己的母校有着深厚的感情。
At Princeton, alumni parade through the town wearing their class uniforms and singing their alma mater.
在普林斯顿，校友们穿着他们的校服，唱着他们的母校的歌在城里游行。
这两个词，看着一点都不像英文，因为它确实是英语里的外来词：起源于拉丁语，字面意思是“滋养的母亲”。

想想其实也挺形象，我们在学校的学习，不就像接受学校母亲般的教育滋养吗？它应该就是这样引申出母校的意思吧。

但其实“母校”这个说法本身就很中式，如说想表达自己的母校是XX, 美国人会倾向于直接说I graduated from xx.

She graduated from Harvard this year.
她今年毕业于哈佛大学。
国外差不多也是9月开学，很多学校都有School Open Day，别看到“open”就想当然地以为是开学，不然可是要闹笑话的。

这里的open是“开放”的意思，也可以用open house，表示向公众开放参观的时间。
至于开学的正确表达，则有以下几种：
1）register /ˈredʒɪstə(r)/ v. 开学报道（通常适用于新生）
Have you come to register at the school?
你到学校来报道了吗？
2）new semester/term starts/begins
The new term starts at the beginning of September.
新学期于九月初开始。
Semester适用于美国，一学年有春季和秋季学期两个学期.
spring/fall semester
He was granted admission from Harvard University for the next fall semester.
哈佛大学准许他明年秋季入学。
而term适用于英国，一学年分为春季、夏季和秋季三个学期
spring/summer/autumn/fall term 春季╱夏季╱秋季学期
Many students now have paid employment during term.
现在许多学生在上学期间就从事有薪工作。
3）a new school year kicks off

4）back to school
My daughter will be back to school next Monday.

那么，你是期待开学派还是害怕开学派呢？我猜这多半取决于你是送孩子上课还是自己要上课吧，以及处于哪个学习阶段吧。
1）kindergarten /ˈkɪndəɡɑːtn/ n. 幼儿园
Bring the children back from kindergarten at four o'clock.
下午四点把孩子们从幼儿园接回来。
2）primary/elementary school 小学
The move from elementary school to middle school or junior high can be difficult.
从小学进入中学或者初中的这种变动可能会有困难。
(elementary school是美式说法，primary school是英式说法)
3）junior high school 初中；senior high school 高中
Are you still teaching at the junior high school?
你还在初中教书吗？
As a teenager he attended Tulse Hill Senior High School.
十几岁时，他上了塔尔斯山高级中学。
4）vocational school 职业院校 （美式用法）
vocational /vəʊˈkeɪʃənl/ adj. 职业的，行业的
She was given some quick training at the vocational school.
她在职业学校受过速成训练。
5）university/institutions of higher learning 高等院校
He's hoping to go to university next year.
他希望明年能上大学。
The five-day week is now usual in institutions of higher learning.
每周上五天课在高等学府已很普遍。
