AL CAPONE (1899-1947)
On January 25, 1947, at his Miami Beach estate, the most famous criminal during the 1930s died. His name was Al Capone. He was known to the F.B.I. as “Public Enemy Number One(头号公敌).” He was also known by his nickname: “Scarface.” Al Capone got that nickname after he insulted the sister of another gangster. That gangster sliced Al’s face from his ear to his chin.
In 1920, the United States government passed a law making it a crime to make, sell, or transport alcoholic drinks. This meant no one could make drinks such as beer, gin(杜松子酒), rum(朗姆酒), whisky, or wine. This period in American history was called Prohibition(禁酒时期). It lasted from 1920 to 1933.
There were many people who wanted liquor whether it was against the law or not. Al Capone gave the people the liquor they wanted. Selling alcohol became big business in Chicago. Capone made millions of dollars.
It was during the 1920s that gang wars broke out in Chicago. Other gangsters in Chicago also wanted to control the liquor business. Capone didn’t want to share the liquor business with anyone. This led to murders, beatings, and bombings. Finally, Capone gained control of all the small territories in the city of Chicago. He became so powerful that he controlled just about the whole city.
Capone was finally sent to prison, not because he ordered the murders of other gang members or sold alcoholic drinks, but because he didn’t pay his income taxes.
AI “Scarface” Capone spent almost eight years in prison. After his release, he retired to his home in Miami, Florida.
